Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The dietary sources nutrient database identifies the amount of 31 nutrients in 100 grams of each USDA survey food code. Nutrients from 7,358 foods were assigned to one or more of the 113 dietary sources groups. Slightly more than half the survey foods were assigned directly to one group because dietary guidance recommendations consider these as single foods or because of similarities in nutrient content or meal use. The remaining foods were mixtures disaggregated by FoodLink, a USDA computer based research tool that translates information about foods into ingredient level data. Ingredients of these mixtures were assigned to dietary groups. Nutrients from each food or ingredient were ascribed accordingly to each group. This is the first release of the database although earlier versions have been used in published results for four studies. The database contains the file for dietary source groups and nutrients per 100 grams food code, documentation, food and group description files, file formats and a sample program to assist users in joining the dietary source-nutrient records to survey intake data.
