Technical Abstract: Hawaii has an expanding tropical exotic fruits industry. Since the opening of export markets for a number of fruits in 1997, the aceage in lychee, longan, and rambutan has grown dramatically. Growers are concerned about losses to arthropod pests. The major pests of these crops are oriental fruit fly, Cryptophlebia spp., litchi erinose mite, Chinese rose beetle, and various scales and mealybugs. The presence of ants can also be a problem in fruit for export. The biology of the pests, symptoms of damage, and control options are discussed. Oriental fruit fly and Cryptophlebia can damage 25% or more of the crop. GF-120 bait spray should be tested for control of oriental fruit fly. New pheromone lures have been developed that are significantly more attractive to Cryptophlebia than those previously in use. Ants tend scale insects and mealybugs can be controlled with bait stations. Timing of spray applications are critical to control erinose mite on litchi.
