Technical Abstract:
Glycerol is present in many natural surfactant compounds such as glycerides and phospholipids that find use in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical products. Several novel structures were proposed that incorporate glycerol as the hydrophilic moiety or as a linking group with hydrophilic character. These compounds were compared to the natural surfactants on the basis of the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) and critical micelle concentration (CMC) values. Synthetic routes for the preparation of these surfactants from renewable substrates were suggested.
