Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Primer-directed polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to completely sequence 713 bp of the third intron contained in the turkey insulin-like growth factor-II (IGF-II) gene from genomic DNA samples. The turkey IGF-II gene codes for a 187 amino acid pre-proprotein that includes a signal peptide, the mature IGF-II hormone, and a C-terminal extension peptide comprised of 24, 67 and 96 amino acids, respectively. Surprisingly, turkey IGF-II intron 3 showed a high degree (approximately 90%) of nucleotide sequence homology with the corresponding region of the chicken IGF-II gene. Typically, intronic sequence demonstrates a great deal of variation even among closely related species such as chickens and turkeys. This sequence data will be useful in studying the structure and expression of the turkey IGF-II gene in poultry.
