Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Five different nitrogen-response experiments were laid out in a 32 ha field in central Iowa in 2001 to evaluate different approaches for mapping field area responses to nitrogen fertilizer. The approaches varied from a "traditional" experiment station protocol using small rectangular plots, six nitrogen (N) rates, and relatively uniform field areas to a field strip approach using 750 m long strips, three N rates, and variable soil and landscape properties. In addition to yield data, terrain, electrical conductivity, and soil color information has been collected for the entire field. The data will be analyzed using both traditional statistical approaches, such as analysis of variance (ANOVA) and regression analysis, and data mining techniques. Preliminary analyses results are inconclusive as to whether any of these approaches can be used to map N-responsive areas in these fields, but work is continuing.
