Poor oxidative and low temperature stability is considered to be the most critical problems for vegetable oil-based lubricants. These problems can only be partially relieved by lubricant additives, thus vegetable oils have to be modified. In this study, a series of structural modifications of vegetable oils using anhydrides of different chain lengths were investigated. The procedure is based on a single step and two step synthetic route for converting sites of unsaturation in triglyceride fatty esters to diester functionality. The resultant base fluids exhibit superior oxidation stability, improved low temperature stability and better wear properties than the unmodified vegetable oil and have utility in hydraulic fluids, lubricants, metalworking fluids and similar applications.
