Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Comprehensive evaluations of the USDA rice core subset are essential for assessing the entire collection. Thus, kernel dimensions, weight and color of 1,615 entries out of 1,801 accessions in the core were evaluated by the 2312 GrainCheck (FOSS Tecator). The rough rice sample sizes varied from 100 to 732 grains. Sixty-seven entries were white in hull color, 814 straw, 123 golden, 57 tawny or russet, 85 furrowed, 449 spotted or pibald, 16 purple and 4 black. Grain length ranged from 5.9 to 13.0 mm with an average of 8.7±0.9 mm, and width from 2.2 to 4.4 mm with an average of 3.1±0.4 mm. Ratio of length to width ranged from 1.7 to 4.4 with an average of 2.8± 0.5 cm, and 1000 grain weight from 12.5 to 42.7 g with an average of 26.2± .4 g. For brown or dehulled rice, sample sizes varied from 78 to 862 kernels. Fifty-four entries were white in bran color, 1357 light brown, 58 brown, 144 red and 2 purple. Length ranged from 4.2 to 10.0 mm with an average of 6.5±0.8 mm, and width from 1.5 to 3.5 mm with an average of 2.6±0.3 mm. Ratio of length to width ranged from 1.5 to 4.5 with an average of 2.7±0.5, and 1000 kernel weight from 9.5 to 37.4 g with an average of 21.4±3.7 g. Apparent hull percentage over rough rice ranged from 10.0 to 32.1 with an average of 18.6±4.0. The complete data will be displayed in GRIN (Germplasm Resources Information Network).
