Technical Abstract: A forum to discuss present and future applications of biotechnology to the sugarbeet crop was held on March 3rd, 2005 in Palm Springs, CA. The forum was led and organized by J. R. Stander of Betaseed and included presentations from Rudolf Jansen of KWS, Klaas van der Woude from Van der Have, Gerhard Steinrucken from Syngenta, and Bruno Desprez from Florimond Desprez. Topics discussed included the variety of biotechnology techniques presently available, breeding traits currently being incorporated into sugarbeet using biotechnology, financial and public acceptance concerns that limit the application of biotechnology, strengths and weaknesses of traditional breeding and genetic transformation for the development of new sugarbeet varieties, and future uses of biotechnology for improved sugarbeet varieties.
