Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: The American Academy of Microbiology convened a colloquium last November on the role of antibiotics in agriculture. This round table will present the conclusions and recommendations from the colloquium. Although there have been a number of meetings on these intriguing issues, this colloquium was unique, in that it drew on experts in the field to take a forward look in the development of approaches to determine the role(s) of antimicrobial use in agriculture. Participants assessed the current situation, developed a specific set of research questions that need to be addressed – e.g., does the use of antimicrobial agents in agriculture substantially contribute to the problem of resistance emergence? – and determined what tools and sampling strategies need to be developed or used in the assessment. |
