Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Owing to growing environmental concerns, vegetable oils are finding their way as lubricants for industrial and automotive applications. Vegetable oils offer significant advantages in terms of resource renewability and biodegradability, as well as comparable performance properties to petroleum-based products. Their amphiphilic character makes them an excellent candidate as lubricants and as specialty chemicals. This work describes the development and tribochemical evaluation of vegetable oil based antiwear additive through chemical modification. The process retains the vegetable oil structure, i.e. triacylglycerol backbone, eliminates poly-unsaturation in the molecule, and adds polar functional groups that significantly improve adsorption on metal surfaces. These compounds also contribute to the formation of protective films through chemical reaction during the tribochemical process. Comparative tests with commercial products demonstrate its effectiveness.
