Technical Abstract: The Botanical Society of America is a "not-for-profit" membership society that exists to promote botany. To accomplish this mission, the objectives of The Society are to: sustain and provide improved formal and informal education about plants; encourage basic plant research; provide expertise, direction, and position statements concerning plants and ecosystems; and foster communication within the professional botanical community, and between botanists and the rest of humankind through publications, meetings, and committees. One way to accomplish these goals is to provide outreach publications to encourage students to enter a botanical career. This publication is a personal account of my development as a systematic botanist and the exciting work that this entails as a plant collector and Research Scientist working for the USDA.
