Interpretive Summary: Soybean yields in USA, Brazil, Argentina and China are limited by the soybean cyst nematode (SCN). Soybean yields are also reduced by several fungal pathogens including stem canker, frogeye leaf spot, Anthracnose and sudden death syndrome. Cultivars resistant to combination of nematodes and fungal pathogens will greatly improve the yields and profits to growers. Soybean line JTN-5503 was developed and released with the unique combination of high resistance to several nematode races, multiple fungal pathogens and higher yield. Seed-yield from this line is significantly higher than 5601T, ‘Fowler’, ‘Manokin’ and ‘Anand’ in the Southern States. The unique combination of resistance to nematodes, fungal pathogens and higher yield in this line should improve profits to growers especially in the Mid South Area. JTN-5503 also has great value as a parent in soybean improvement because of its broad resistance.

Technical Abstract: Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] germplasm line JTN-5503 is a selection from the cross ‘Fowler’ x ‘Manokin’ and is an F7 –derived line. The pedigrees for both the parental cultivars Fowler and Manokin include ‘Hartwig’ x ‘Holladay’ and L7-0L-3048 x D74-7824, respectively. F2 plants resistant to soybean cyst nematode (SCN) (Heterodera glycines Ichinohe) race 2 (corresponding to HG Type 1.2-) were selected and grown in F3 rows. Progenies were advanced through mass selection and further selections were made for superior agronomic types with SCN resistance to multiple races and predominant fungal pathogens. Marker assisted selection (MAS) identified a soybean line with combined resistance to SCN races 2, 3, 5 and 14 (corresponding to HG Types 1.2.5.7, 0, 2.5.7. 1.3.6.7, respectively). Satt 309, Satt 632, Satt 162 and Satt 082 were used for MAS. Resistance in this line was confirmed with nematode populations in greenhouse phenotyping tests at USDA-ARS, Jackson, TN. JTN-5503 is highly resistant to stem canker, frogeye leaf spot, cercospora leaf blight and moderately resistant to sudden death syndrome and charcoal rot. It is a maturity group V line (relative maturity 5.4) has white flowers, tawny pubescence and a determinate growth habit. Seeds are yellow with black hila. JTN-5503 was entered in the Tennessee State Variety Test in 2004 and averaged 3808 kilograms per hectare in seed yield. In USDA Southern Regional Preliminary and Uniform Group V tests, 2003-2004 the release produced 3675 kilograms per hectare in seed yield, 187 grams per kilogram seed oil, 398 grams per kilogram seed protein and 13.6 g seed weight (100 seeds), respectively. The release matured two days later and was 5 cm shorter in height compared with 5601T. JTN-5503 has great value as a parent in soybean improvement because of its high resistance to SCN, fungal pathogens and higher yield.
