Citation: Glenn, D.M. 2005. Reflective particle films reduce heat stress in plants. International Society for Horticultural Science Meeting.

Technical Abstract: Excessive heat reduces photosynthesis and plant productivity. Reflective particle films reduce leaf and canopy temperature and are used extensively for sunburn and insect damage reduction. Field studies with apple from 1999 to 2005 demonstrated that whole canopy gas exchange was increased when reflective particle films were applied to the canopy. In addition, fruit color and fruit weight increased. Field studies that applied reflective particle films to the orchard floor increased light levels within the canopy resulting in increased color and fruit size. Physiological response of apple, peach, grape, citrus and olive in 40 C growth chamber studies, with and without a reflective particle film, will be presented. Mechanisms of action will be discussed.
