Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Dry pea is an important protein source in human and animal diets worldwide. Due to the nutritional value of peas and their use in human diets in many developing countries where nutrition can be limited, we investigated the genetic control of mineral nutrient accumulation in peas. A recombinant inbred line (RIL) mapping population comprised of 187 lines and derived from the cross ‘Shawnee’ x ‘Bohatyr’ by single seed decent was used to identify genomic regions controlling seed content of twelve minerals Ca, Co, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Mo, Mg, Na, Ni, P, and Zn. Seeds (with seed coats) of each RIL were dried and ground to a uniform powder and two sub-samples of each line were dry ashed and resuspended using trace metal-grade nitric acid. Replicate digests were analyzed for mineral content using inductively-coupled plasma-emission mass spectrometry. A genetic map based on 302 molecular and morphological markers including RAPD and microsattelites had been previously developed. Seed mineral nutrient data showed continuous and normal distributions for all traits and was analyzed using QTL Cartographer version 2.5 for Windows. Significant quantitative trait loci were identified for Ca, Fe, Mn, K, Mg, Ni, P and Zn. Association of these QTL with other traits known to be co-located will be discussed.
