Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Sediment, nutrient, and pesticide losses from agricultural cropland is a major focus of the voluntary conservation practices funded by the 2002 Farm Bill. There has been much emphasis on implementing conservation practices in headwater watersheds to protect downstream source water supplies within the Upper Big Walnut Creek and other agricultural watersheds in Ohio. The objectives of our research are to quantify the hydrological, chemical, and ecological impacts of nutrient management (NRCS conservation practice 590) and pest management (NRCS conservation practice 595) on headwater drainage ditches and streams. One pair of ditches and one pair of streams were selected and instrumented with flumes and automated samplers. We will outline the watershed experiment that we designed to test the influence of nutrient and pest management on these small watersheds. Also, we will present one year (2005) of hydrology, water chemistry, and ecology data.
