Interpretive Summary: This is the first report of Angelonia flower break virus (AnFBV) naturally infecting verbena and phlox. A description of the symptoms and diagnostic methods used to confirm the identity of AnFBV are presented. This report continues a cooperative virology research effort between ARS, ARO and Agdia. It also provides a timely account of AnFBV infection of ornamentals to growers, Extension personnel and state and Federal regulatory and research scientists.

Technical Abstract: A novel carmovirus infecting angelonia (Angelonia angustifolia) was recently described independently by researchers in the US, Israel and Germany. Angelonia flower break virus (AnFBV) and Angelonia flower mottle virus were proposed as appropriate names for this carmovirus. The virus has been detected in angelonia in the US, Israel, and Germany causing stunting, mild leaf mottle, flower mottling and flower breaking symptoms. Reported here is the first detection of natural infection of verbena and phlox by AnFBV. This suggests that AnFBV may be more widespread in the ornamental industry than previously thought.
