Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The Hessian fly is a major pest of wheat in the United States and other parts of the world. Primary control of the pest is through genetically resistant wheat. However, the development of genotypes capable of surviving on formerly resistant wheat is a threat to the durability of resistance. Knowledge of the Hessian fly is very limited at the molecular level. This is an impediment to understanding wheat/Hessian fly interactions and the continued protection of wheat. As a biomarker of cellular activities, the transcriptome of the larval Hessian fly during interaction with wheat is of great interest. We have undertaken an EST project on the larval Hessian fly midgut, a major organ system interfacing with the host plant. Annotation of the assembled sequences has identified genes with digestion, protein metabolism, cellular communication/signal transduction, bioenergetics, detoxification/antioxidant defense, and immune responses. We describe here the expression of antioxidant/detoxification genes in the larval Hessian fly during compatible and incompatible interactions with wheat.
