Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) document that over the last three decades, the prevalence of overweight children 6 to 11 years of age has increased from 4% in the 1963 – 1965 survey to 15% in the 1999 – 2000 survey. These numbers are even more remarkable when the data are examined by ethnicity. In African American and Hispanic children the prevalence of obesity is 24% and nearly 35% for the corresponding adolescents of these ethnic groups. This alarming rise of childhood and adolescent obesity over the past three decades in the United States is now being experienced by nearly every westernized society and is drawing increasing international attention to the real and potential health risks for our youth and young adults.
