Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This technical report provides a brief review of current activities in dairy effluent management in the Victorian (Australia) dairy industry, and recommendations for future research priorities to be potentially supported by the Division of Agricultural Development in the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) over the short-, medium-, and long-term. The report (1) reviews current DPI research, development and extension in dairy effluent management; (2) identifies knowledge gaps, research needs, and the outputs to be generated in developing productive and sustainable dairy effluent management in pasture-based milk production systems; (3) comments on the linkages between groups within DPI and other organizations, and linkages to service providers and to dairy farmers; and (4) provides findings of interest to investment managers, key project managers, and senior research staff in DPI. The review is based on document reviews and consultations with DPI research and extension staff in Ellinbank, Warrnambool and Kyabram, representatives from Victorian Environmental Protection Authority, dairy industry organizations, including RD&E funding bodies, dairy processing companies, and dairy farmer organizations.
