Interpretive Summary: An increase in consumer demands for Organic agricultural products is resulting in an increase in organic production and research into these production systems. Although the research branch of the USDA, the Agricultural Research Service does not have a formal program to address the needs of organic producers and affiliated industries individual researchers and research programs are addressing some of these needs. Organic growers and stakeholders play a role in these research programs and in planning the future of ARS research in organic agriculture.

Technical Abstract: In 2000, a survey of scientists at the US Department of Agriculture/Agricultural research Service (USDA/ARS) revealed that approximately 1 percent of the scientists were interested in organic agricultural and a little less than half of those interested had participated in research in certified or certifiable organic production systems. Since 2002, the USDA/ARS organic research portfolio has increased in scope and size. The impact of the USDA/ARS organic research portfolio will continue to be rooted in its interactions with organic stakeholders.
