Interpretive Summary: In this feature article, we discuss the importance and current situations of collections of living microorganisms and plants. Methods for preservation and resources of collections were presented. Issues, such as correct identification of materials, regulatory and safety aspects of collection management and utilization, the impact of intellectual property rights on germplasm users, and funding of collections and the problem of endangered collections were discussed. Suggestions are made for improving collections of living microorganisms and plants.
