Technical Abstract: Primitive cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) race stocks represent resources for genetic improvement for fiber quality, pathogen resistance, and increased tolerance to environment stresses. Most tropical primitive accessions are photoperiod sensitive and do not flower under the long days of the U.S. cotton belt. An F2 population composed of 251 plants from the cross between Deltapine 61, a day neutral commercial cultivar, and Texas 701, a photoperiod sensitive primitive accession, were used to associate genes related to time of flowering with simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Additive dominance model analysis showed that five markers on three chromosomes can account for 32, 31 and 30% of the variation in node of first branch, node of first open boll, and flower number, respectively. Significant epistasis interactions were found between two pairs of markers for node of first fruiting branch, a pair of markers for node of first open boll, and a pair of markers for flowering number, respectively.
