Technical Abstract: Chloroplast and nuclear SSR markers and morphology were used to study hybridization and introgression between Quercus douglasii and Q. lobata, two sympatric oak species native to California. Chloroplast SSR markers provided strong evidence of gene exchange via ongoing introgression between these species, but no such evidence was obtained from any of the nuclear markers studied. Early-generation hybrids were detected using both SSR and morphological data, but not all individuals could be confidently assigned to particular classes of hybrids due to high levels of within-population variability for all markers within both species.
