Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This book chapter is part of a series reviewing advances in transgenic crop plants. The chapter covers advances in barley transformation. Conventional and biotechnological approaches to barley improvement are discussed. Experiments conducted around the world to improve barley food, feed and malting quality, disease resistance and other traits are described as well as components of transformation such as construct design. Issues concerned with public acceptance of transgenic barley and other crops are addressed as well as challenges faced for successful expression of transgenes. This review provides a resource for barley biotechnologists and others interested in the potential of transformation for barley improvement.
