Title: Different Genetic Mechanisms Control Foliar and Tuber Resistance to Phytophthora Infestans in Wild Potato Solanum Verrucosum

Interpretive Summary: Late blight is one of the most devastating plant pathogens of potato. Previous results have shown that a wild potato species, Solanum verrucosum contains resistance to late blight. We have tested resistance of S. verrucosum to a different isolate of late blight containing different pathogenic traits. Resistance of the eight S. verrucosum accessions using this different isolate varied from our previous results. This suggests that some accessions of this species contain resistance to multiple isolates of late blight. Furthermore, testing of S. verrucosum tubers indicated that some accessions contain tuber resistance to late blight.

Technical Abstract: Late blight, caused by the hemibiotrophic oomycete pathogen Phytophthora infestans, is one of the most devastating plant pathogens of potato. Previous results have shown that a wild potato species, Solanum verrucosum contains resistance to late blight. Using greenhouse inoculation assays, we have tested the late blight resistance levels in eight S. verrrucosum accessions to an isolate that contains multiple avirulence genes. Ressitance among the accessions varied between moderate and high levels. We also tested the resistance phenotypes of greenhouse grown S. verrucosum tubers. Again, accessions differed in their resistance to P. infestans. Our results demonstrate that S. verrucosum contains broad-spectrum resistance to multiple P. infestans isolates. Furthermore, we show that some accessions of this species may offer valuable tuber resistance to late blight.
