Technical Abstract: Lactococcus garvieae infection in cultured Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, and pintado, Pseudoplathystoma corruscans from Brazil is reported. This is the first evidence of the presence of this pathogen from Brazilian fish and the first report of L. garvieae infection in either Nile tilapia or pintado. Collectively, this evidence expands the geographical range of fish hosts and fish hosts harboring L. garvieae. Previously recognized from Brazilian water buffaloes, its occurrence in Brazilian fish poses the question as to whether these strains are endemic or introductions into the area. On the basis of phenotypic characterization using conventional tests and the Biolog Microlog® system, isolates were identified as L. garvieae and exhibited similar reactions as Brazilian buffalo isolates suggesting the isolates are endemic. Biolog identification of L. garvieae may be a promising identification technique in the absence of molecular techniques for the identification of L. garvieae.
