Interpretive Summary: We report HTML::GMap, a Perl-based software we developed to easily build web-based geographic map displays on top of the Google MapsTM Mapping Service. Using the software, we developed two web displays that present molecular diversity data in the context of a geographic map. These displays make it easier to examine the inherent geographic relationships within the data sets. The software is built to be generic and can be used by other groups to build displays to present other types of data. The software is well-documented and distributed as an open source package.

Technical Abstract: We have developed HTML::GMap, a generic, high-level Perl wrapper, to easily build web-based geographic map displays on top of the Google MapsTM Mapping Service. Using HTML::GMap, we built custom display tools to present the molecular diversity data generated by the National Science Foundation-supported project Molecular and Functional Diversity of the Maize Genome. The displays present the geographic distribution of germplasm accessions as well as allele frequency spectra for single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), simple sequence repeat (SSR), and isozyme markers.
