Technical Abstract: This chapter reviews the structural characteristics of the Arteriviridae, including the basic molecular details of all of the proteins involved, the interactions of these proteins and where they occur, and further functional characterization. Most recent available literature has been focused on equine arteritis virus (EAV) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), and thus this review concentrates primarily on these viruses. However, early studies on murine lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus (LDV) and simian hemorrhagic fever virus (SHFV) were often critical to understanding the later work, particularly in the subject of viral attachment, and thus are prominently mentioned when appropriate. Space limitations prevented any discussion of the clinical diseases caused by arteriviruses, the immense evolutionary variation that exists and, except briefly, the immune response to these proteins. Lastly, a current model of virus propagation is displayed.
