Technical Abstract: Responses of newborn calves to vaccination are variable and often characterized by marginal humoral (i.e., antibody) responses. The immune cell population pivotal in the production of antibody is the B cell. The composition and functional capacity of this population in the newborn calf is not well characterized. Results from this study provide new information regarding the composition and functional capacity of B cells in preruminant calves vaccinated at an early age. Although preliminary, these data indicate that the responsiveness of B cell population in young calves is dependent on the nature of the vaccine and less on animal maturity. This research provides important new information regarding the immune responsiveness of the neonatal calf to vaccination that may be useful in the development of effective vaccines for newborn calves.
