Technical Abstract: This book chapter outlines the cellular processes that are activated and interact during host immune responses including: (a) phagocytosis and antigen presentation by cells of the mononuclear phagocyte system (monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells), and (b) cell-mediated and humoral immunity by lymphocytes (B, T, and NK cells). Ultrastructure of resting and activated cells of the monocyte-macrophage lineage is detailed. In addition, a detailed description is included for the ultrastructure of monocyte-macrophage lineage cells in inflammation or as a result of pathologic proliferation. The next section of the chapter deals with antigen-presenting cells found in several lymphoid tissues. Finally, the roles of lymphocyte lineage cells in the host response are discussed and modifications in architecture as a result of cellular activation are examined.
