Title: Resistance to Soybean Aphid Among Soybean Lines, Growth-chamber Tests, 2006 Through 2008

Interpretive Summary: We tested for resistance to the soybean aphid (SBA) among several soybean lines, and rated lines as resistant or susceptible in seven tests. The ratings of plants with respect to SBA infestation differed among lines in all tests. The lines Kosamame, Bhart, and Bragg each had a proportion of resistant plants that was comparable to that of the resistant check and greater than that of their respective susceptible check. All other test lines had no resistant plants or a low proportion of resistant plants that did not differ from that of the susceptible checks. Future studies are needed to characterize the resistance mechanisms and incorporate the resistance genes into contemporary soybean lines.

Kosamame (PI 171451, test II), Bhart (PI 165989, test III), and Bragg (PI 548660, test VI) each had a proportion of resistant plants that was comparable to that of the resistant check and greater than that of their respective susceptible check. All other test lines had no resistant plants or a low proportion of resistant plants that did not differ from that of the susceptible checks. Future studies are needed to characterize the resistance mechanisms and incorporate the resistance genes into contemporary soybean lines.
