Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This review is on the effect of high fat diets on poultry growth and metabolism. Results from our lab and in the literature show that high fat diets do not cause increase body weights but reduce lean meat percentage. High fat diets containing up to 15% animal fats did not cause femoral head separation (FHS) which was the basic hypothesis based on earlier observation that chickens with FHS had high serum lipid levels. However, they reduce bone strength and mineralization. High fat diets also cause liver inflammation.
