Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The special issue of Ecological complexity journal on Fractal Modeling and Scaling in Natural Systems contains representative examples of the status and evolution of data-driven research into fractals and scaling in complex natural systems. The editorial discusses contributions to understanding relationships between fractal scaling cutoffs and changes in environmental controls, ambiguities in multifractal analysis of pore space and surface morphology, generation of synthetic fractal and multifractal datasets, using fractal parameters as indicators of structural changes, non-local interactions as the underlying mechanisms of empirical fractal scaling, and the role of human perception in object definitions that lead to fractal scaling. The guest-editors sincerely hope that this diverse collection of papers demonstrates the value of multifaceted applications of fractal geometry, and related fields, for better understanding the Earth’s environment.
