Technical Abstract: Cottonseed germination and seedling development are highly sensitive to the environment at planting and for several weeks after that. Major factors that affect germination and development are temperature, water availability, soil conditions such as compaction, rhizosphere gases, and seed and seedling pathogens. This chapter refers to earlier reviews of cotton seed germination and seedling establishment in describing the physiology of germinating cotton seeds. It also presents a guide to recent investigations on how environmental and management factors affect seed germination and seedling establishment, which ultimately help determine both the yield and the quality of a cotton crop.
