Technical Abstract: Phosphorous-containing flame retardants are widely used in standard and engineering plastics, polyurethane foams, thermosets, coatings, and textiles. Organophosphorous flame retardants have been known to be more effective when used in conjunction with nitrogen-containing systems. Their mixture produces incombustible non-toxic gases which can dilute the concentration of the oxygen near the flame, and the charred layers become protective barriers to the material against flame and heat. The goal of this work was to achieve high flame retardancy for phosphonates triazine compound. The synthesized tetramethyl (6-chloro-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyl)bis(oxy)bis(methylene)diphosphonate: (1) and dimethyl (4,6-dichloro-1,3,5-triazin-2-yloxy)methylphosphonate, (2) were characterized using standard tests. Cotton twill was treated with 1 to provide add-on values of 18 and 19%. Thermal analyses of treated fabrics showed early onset temperatures of degradation and higher char percent at 600oC compare to that of non-treated fabrics. Average limiting oxygen index (LOI) values ASTM D-2863-00 of treated fabrics with 19% add-on was 34%. Vertical flame tests ASTM D-6413-99 for 12 seconds showed no after flame and no after glow and passed the test requirements. Modified methenamine pill test of the treated fabrics showed 0.6 inches of charred area. The results of these tests showed that (1) acted as a good flame retardant. In addition, data of micro cone calorimeter of treated fabrics with (1) will be presented.
