Title: Registration of TTU-0782 upland cotton germplasm line with superior fiber quality

Interpretive Summary: A good quality upland cotton germplasm, TTU 0782, was developed and released on May 25, 2010 by Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX. It is developed from a cross between a high fiber quality mutant line developed by Texas Tech University and an Acala line from New Mexico State University. A germplasm line from the cross identified as uniform was evaluated in the field from 2003 to 2008 at Lubbock, TX; 2004, 2005, and 2007 at College Station, TX; and in 2009 at two locations at Stoneville, MS. The candidate germplasm was compared to some of the best germplasm available at each locality (Raider 276, TTU 0808-1-6-1, TTU 0774-3-3, and FiberMax 958 at Lubbock and College Station, TX.; SG 747, MD 25, and MD 15ne at Stoneville, MS. Across eleven field tests spanning across seven years at all the test environments, TTU 0782 had 8 % higher HVI fiber length than FiberMax 958, 8 % higher than Raider 276, 9 % higher than SG 747, 5 % higher than MD 25, and 2 % higher than MD 15ne. TTU 0782 had 9 and 21 % higher fiber strength than FiberMax 958 at Lubbock and College Station, respectively. At Stoneville, the candidate germplasm had lower fiber strength than MD 15ne but 7 % higher strength than MD 25. The length uniformity indexes at both Lubbock and College Station were 2 % higher for the germplasm line as compared to FiberMax 958. TTU 0782 had lower short fiber content (SFCn) at all locations when compared to FiberMax 958. It also had consistently high maturity ratios across all environments. The candidate germplasm, the three germplasm released earlier, and the FiberMax check cultivar grown at Lubbock and College Station, were spun using industrial-scale ring spinning equipment and yarn results were compared to the worldwide industrial benchmarks assembled and published by Uster Technologies AG. TTU 0782 had tenacity level higher than all tested entries. It ranked among the best 10 % performers for tenacity in the Uster statistics. It ranked among the top 5 % performers for low hairiness, top 25 % for thin and thick places and nep counts and among the top 50 % for mass CV%. The superior fiber-quality traits of TTU 0782 should make it valuable as a breeding line in the improvement of fiber quality.

Technical Abstract: A germplasm line of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) designated as TTU 0782 with improved fiber quality was developed. It possesses longer fiber length, higher fiber bundle strength, high uniformity index, low short fiber content, high maturity ratio, and low nep counts. Spinning tests also indicated that TTU 0782 had high tenacity and lower thin and thick places, lower neps, and lower hairiness. TTU 0782 is derived from the cross TTU 202-1107B with ‘Acala 1517-95’. A germplasm line identified as uniform in the F5 was evaluated in the field from 2003 to 2008 at Lubbock, TX; 2004, 2005, and 2007 at College Station, TX; and 2009 at Stoneville, MS (two locations) for lint yield and fiber quality. Across eleven field tests spanning across seven years at Lubbock, College Station (TX), and Stoneville (MS), TTU 0782 had average fiber length of 32.5 mm. These values were 8 % longer than the length of FiberMax 958 (P<0.05) at Lubbock and College Station, and 5 % and 2 % longer than MD 25 and MD 15ne, respectively, at Stoneville, MS. TTU 0782 had 9 and 21 % higher fiber strength than FiberMax 958 (P<0.05) at Lubbock and College Station, respectively. At Stoneville, the candidate germplasm had lower fiber strength than MD 15ne but 7 % higher strength than MD 25. The length uniformity indexes at both Lubbock and College Station were 2 % higher (P<0.05) for the germplasm line as compared to FiberMax 958. TTU 0782 also had lower short fiber content (SFCn) at all locations when compared to FiberMax 958. It also had consistently high maturity ratios across all environments. Yarn tests indicated that the candidate germplasm had tenacity level higher than all tested entries. It ranked among the best 10 % performers in the Uster statistics. It had the lowest nep counts The superior fiber-quality traits of TTU 0782 should make it valuable as a breeding line in the improvement of fiber quality.
