Outlet works energy dissipators - best practices for design, construction, problem identification and evaluation, inspection, maintenance, renovation, and repair. FEMA Technical Manual P-679. CDROM

Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: An outlet works is a combination of structures and equipment required for the safe operation and control of water released from a reservoir to serve various purposes like regulating stream flow and water quality; releasing floodwater; and/or providing irrigation, municipal, or industrial water. Outlet works may include an intake structure, conduit, control house-gates, regulating gate or valve, gate chamber, and/or an energy dissipation structure. This manual focuses on the methods used to dissipate the energy resulting from the release of water through the outlet works for safe discharge downstream. Hydraulic jump stilling basins, impact basins, plunge basins, stilling wells, conduit outlet expansions, riprap energy dissipaters are a few examples of energy dissipators. This manual is a comprehensive document that discusses the design and construction of various types of energy dissipators; the inspection, maintenance, and repair of energy dissipators; the public safety and vandalism prevention of energy dissipators; and future research needs as they relate to energy dissipators for outlet works.
