Technical Abstract: The increasing awareness of the severity of the problem of phosphorus (P) derived from agricultural production moving off-farm and threatening water quality has led to the search for methods to characterize the forms and potential solubilities of phosphorus in food animal manures and manure products. This chapter divides the methods into three broad classes, water-extractable phosphorus (WEP), other single-extractant methods, and sequential fractionation of manure P with a series of alkaline and acidic solutions. Given the variability in procedures used for WEP and sequential fractionation determinations, methodological issues are discussed, and examples were taken from the research literature on different manure handling procedures and their effect on soluble P forms. These procedures include dietary manipulation to reduce soluble P excretion, composting and manure processing, and chemical amendment of manure by compounds with the potential to bind P in potentially less environmentally threatening forms. These studies are summarized to contribute to the goal of providing environmentally sound manure management practices.
