Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Aspergillus flavus strains vary widely in their production of aflatoxins and cyclopiazonic acid (CPA). A total of 500 Aspergillus strains isolated from a variety of sources showed 16.4% were negative for both aflatoxin and CPA, 41.3% were positive for both mycotoxins, 13.0% were positive only for CPA and 29.3% were positive only for aflatoxin. Non-aflatoxigenic biocontrol K49, NRRL 21882, and AF36 strains of A. flavus can alter aflatoxins, CPA and fumonisin in corn. K49 and NRRL 21882 were significantly better than AF36 in reducing total aflatoxin and CPA contaminations. Because AF36 produces CPA, high CPA levels accumulated in corn inoculated with AF36 alone. Pin-bar inoculation with K49 reduced fumonisin contamination of harvested corn kernels to 0.1 and 27 ppm from 253 and 1087 ppm, respectively. NRRL 21882 and AF36 inoculation gave similar fumonisin reduction trends. Thus, NRRL 21882 and K49 are effective in reducing aflatoxins, CPA, and fumonisins in corn.
