Interpretive Summary: Wheat is the world’s largest crop used for direct human consumption. Approximately half of the wheat in the U.S. is milled in the eastern region served by the USDA-ARS Soft Wheat Quality Laboratory (SWQL), Wooster, OH. Since the 1930’s, the SWQL has conducted genetic studies of wheat quality through long established coordinated research with 14 state land-grant universities in the eastern U.S. It is one of the few laboratories in the world that that develops methods for testing quality of soft wheat, the major wheat type grown in Ohio and the eastern U.S.

Technical Abstract: The report describes new activities for the lab including the a transitions in the laboratory and activites on the USDA, NIFA-funded Triticeae CAP project. Recent research on milling and quality evaluations, data management, molecular evaluations, stem rust resistance from the lab are highlighted, as are current efforts to streamline and improve current quality analysis procedures. Ranges for quality analyses desired by industry are summarized, providing targets for soft wheat breeders in the region. Results for the Soft Wheat Quality Council analyses, Overseas Varietal Analysis and collaborative projects with soft wheat breeders are summarized. A summary of methods used in the laboratory, including new and revised methods, is provided.
