Interpretive Summary: Some leaf traits of soybean, including leaf area (LA), leaf shape (LS) and specific leaf weight (SLW) has been implicated with seed yield. The objective of this study was to identify novel quantitative trait loci (QTL) for LA, LS and SLW in a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population developed from a cross of soybean cultivar Wyandot and Plant Introduction (PI) 567301B from China. The phenotypic data were collected in 2011 and 2012 for 93 F7-derived RILs and their parents using a randomized complete block design with 2-replicates each year. Five hundred sixteen single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers generated earlier from this population and the phenotype data were used to detect QTL for LA, LS, and SLW using single marker analysis and interval mapping. Single markers analysis identified 26 QTL for the three traits of which 17 were new and the remaining QTL were previously reported by others. Most of these QTL were also identified by interval mapping, though the logarithm of odds (LOD) values for few QTL were below the significance threshold at P<0.05. Most QTL reported here were located in close proximity (<1 cM) of one or more publicly available SNP markers, developed by ARS scientists. These SNP markers with close linkage with LA, LS, and SLW will be useful for marker assisted breeding of soybean.

Technical Abstract: Several leaf traits of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.), including leaf area (LA), leaf shape (LS) and specific leaf weight (SLW) may be related to soybean yield. As we have used a dense genetic map constructed with publicly available SNP markers, most QTL reported here were located in close proximity (<1 cM) of one or more SNP markers. These publicly available SNP markers with close linkage with LA, LS, and SLW are highly valuable for marker assisted breeding for these traits.
