Interpretive Summary: Crop plants are attacked by plant pathogens and destructive insects. Some insects vector pathogens. Biological control one of the most stainable and environmentally friendly approaches to control plant pests. Microbial biocontrol agents consist of beneficial viruses, bacteria, and fungi that antagonize plant pests. This chapter outlines the concepts of biological control and practical laboratory exercises related to the use of microbial biocontrol agents to control plant pests.

Technical Abstract: All parts of plants face continual attack by plant pathogens and insects. Some insects are vectors of pathogens. Plant pests can be controlled by a variety of methods including application of pesticides but one of the most stainable and environmentally friendly approaches is biological control. Microbial biocontrol agents consist of viruses, bacteria, and fungi that antagonize pathogens and insect pests. This chapter outlines the concepts of biological control and practical laboratory exercises to isolate, identify and apply microbial biocontrol agents to control plant pests.
