Interpretive Summary: Viruses and common bacterial blight (CBB) cause production losses in common and tepary beans. Developing resistance to viruses, specifically BCMV, BCMNV and BGYMV, will be critical for expanding tepary bean production. This study evaluated the response of 207 accessions of tepary bean from the CIAT tepary collection to BCMNV and to common bacterial blight. Resistance to BCMNV was identified in a few accessions. A large range of response to CBB was found, with the collection skewed for resistance. BCMV and CBB resistance is being incorporated in tepary breeding lines to improve production of this orphan crop.

Technical Abstract: Aphid-transmitted Bean Common Mosaic Necrosis Virus (BCMNV) and Bean Common Mosaic Virus (BCMV) are potyvirus that cause production losses in common and tepary beans. Developing resistance to viruses, specifically BCMV, BCMNV and BGYMV, will be critical for expanding tepary bean production. This study evaluated the response of 207 accessions of tepary bean from the CIAT tepary collection to BCMNV and to common bacterial blight (CBB), caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Xap). Veinal necrosis and local pinpoint necrotic lesions were identified as a response to BCMNV. A large range of response to CBB was found, with the collection skewed for resistance. Populations have been generated for the study of the genetics of BCMV and CBB response in tepary bean. BCMV and CBB resistance is also being incorporated in breeding lines.
