Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Schizophyllan is a homoglucan produced by the fungus Schizophyllum commune, with a ß-1,3-linked backbone and ß-1,6-linked side chains of single glucose units at every other residue. Schizophyllan is commercially produced for a variety of applications including in pharmaceutical and cosmetics formulations. Schizophyllan is partially soluble in water resulting in increased viscosity as a function of its concentration. Schizophyllan is surface active and can reduce the surface tension of water and the interfacial tension at the oil-water interface. Its surface active properties allow schizophyllan to solubilize vegetable oils in water. These properties provide Schizophyllan the potential to be used as a critical ingredient of lubricants. This presentation details the investigation aimed at developing schizophyllan for water-based lubricants.
