Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Tarping raised-beds with totally impermeable film (TIF) and applying fumigant to deeper depths may help strawberry growers to achieve pest control and emission reduction targets, but no field data are available to optimize these methods in the raised-bed production system. Under the support of National Strawberry Sustainability Initiative funded project, a field trial was carried out in a commercial strawberry field in fall 2013 at Camarillo, CA to determine the combined effect of deep applying fumigant and surface tarping with TIF in raised-bed systems on pest control efficacy, strawberry production, and fumigant emission losses. Pic-Clor 60 EC (a mixture of 56.7% chloropicrin, 37.1% 1,3-dichloropropene, and 6.2% inert ingredients) was applied to TIF tarped beds via either four drip tapes including two near surface (5 cm deep) and two at 18 cm soil depths or two surface drip lines only. The fumigant application rates include full rate (25 gallon/ac), half-rate (12.5 gallon/ac), and non-fumigated control. Field monitoring and lab analysis include fumigant emission, fumigant distribution in soil and under film, residual fumigant in soil, pest control efficacy, strawberry growth, and strawberry yield. These data will assist in determination of the more effective treatments for pest control and crop yield and the results will be presented to growers and stakeholders via various extension and outreach efforts.
