Technical Abstract: The last fifteen years have seen considerable growth in the application of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) to explore the tribological characteristics of materials. This article reviews some of the advances made in characterizing frictional properties of materials using the QCM, especially with dissipation monitoring. The focus of this review was to demonstrate the effectiveness of the QCM technique to explore various materials for their tribological properties and no way is it intended to be a comprehensive review.
