Interpretive Summary: The ability to rapidly analyze genetic samples from animals, plants, and the environment has led to an exponential growth in the discovery of viruses. Using this technology, a novel virus was identified in a porcine fecal sample collected from pigs that had diarrhea. This virus is similar to a growing group of unclassified viruses called stool associated virus (SCV) that have been detected in the fecal samples collected from chimpanzees, swine, cattle, and turkeys. This report describes the detection of a new porcine SCV identified as PoSCV5. Additional study will be required to determine if this virus has any relationship to the clinical disease observed in the pigs.

Technical Abstract: Metagenomic analysis of fecal samples collected from a swine with diarrhea detected sequences encoding a replicase (Rep) protein typically found in small circular Rep-encoding ssDNA (CRESS-DNA) viruses. The complete 3,062 nucleotide genome was generated and found to encode two bi-directionally transcribed ORF. Phylogenetic analysis places porcine stool-associated virus 5 (PoSV5) alone on a deep branch in the rapidly growing group of CRESS-DNA viruses from feces and environmental sources.
