Interpretive Summary: We announce the complete genome sequence of an attenuated vaccine strain, Streptococcus agalactiae strain 138spar. This is a slow growing vaccine strain that was obtained from its virulent parent strain Streptococcus agalactiae strain 138P (through selection of resistance to sparfloxacin). The virulent parent strain was isolated from the kidney of diseased Nile tilapia in Idaho during a 2007 streptococcal disease outbreak. The full genome of this vaccine strain is 1,838,126 base pairs. The availability of this genome will allow comparison between virulent Strepotococcus agalactiae strain and this attenuated vaccine strain to identify genes associated with virulence, antibiotic resistance, or other features such as growth.

Technical Abstract: Through selection of resistance to sparfloxacin, an attenuated Streptococcus agalactiae strain 138spar was obtained from its virulent parent strain S. agalactiae 138P. The full genome of S. agalactiae 138spar is 1,838,126 bp. The availability of this genome will allow comparative genomics to identify genes associated with virulence, antibiotic resistance, or other characteristics.
