Interpretive Summary: A soybean mapping population was developed by the University of Arkansas Experiment Station. The population consists of recombinant inbred lines from a cross between KS4895 (PI595081) and Jackson (PI548657). The parents were chosen due to differences in sensitivity of nitrogen fixation to drought, with Jackson being tolerant and KS4895 being sensitive. The population was selected to have a similar maturity. The population was genotyped with 171 simple sequence repeat molecular markers by the USDA-ARS Crop Genetics Research Unit at Stoneville, MS and with 493 single nucleotide polymorphic molecular markers by the USDA-ARS Soybean Genomic and Improvement Laboratory in Beltsville, MD. Phenotypic data for the population were collected at multiple field sites for yield, canopy wilting, shoot ureide, shoot nitrogen concentrations, stem nitrogen concentrations, nodule weight, individual nodule weight, nodule size, and the number of nodules. Phenotypic and molecular-marker data were used to identify quantitative trait loci associated with these traits. The population offers a unique educational tool for molecular mapping exercises and genetics and for comparative physiology of drought-related, phenotypic extremes from the same genetic background.

Technical Abstract: AR93705 (Reg. no. MP-_, NSL ______) is a soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] mapping population developed by the University of Arkansas Experiment Station. The population consists of 15 F3- and 76 F5-derived recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from a cross between KS4895 (PI595081) and Jackson (PI548657). The parents were originally chosen due to differences in sensitivity of N2 fixation to drought, with Jackson being tolerant and KS4895 being sensitive. The population was selected to have a similar maturity, with a relative maturity group rating from approximately 5.2 to 5.7. The population was genotyped with 171 polymorphic simple sequence repeats by the USDA-ARS Crop Genetics Research Unit at Stoneville, MS and with 493 polymorphic single nucleotide polymorphisms by the USDA-ARS Soybean Genomic and Improvement Laboratory in Beltsville, MD. Phenotypic data for the population were collected at multiple field sites for yield, canopy wilting, shoot ureide and N concentrations, stem N concentrations, nodule weight (mg plant-1), individual nodule weight (mg nodule-1), nodule size (mm), and nodule number plant-1. Phenotypic and molecular-marker data were used to identify quantitative trait loci associated with these traits.
