Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Determination of the air velocity profile for 12 experimental configurations (ECs) of an acid scrubber was carried out using an equal area traverse method with a vane axial anemometer. Four velocity profile plots were created for each configuration to determine the four optimal ECs. ECs were selected based on the static pressure, available slat surface area, and standard deviation between determined traverse area velocities. Cyclonic flow appeared to exist for ECs with less than 48 slats. Slats appear to act as straightening vanes for cyclonic flow. Cool cell material increased static pressure, decreased average velocity and air flow rate. With 48 slats or more there was minimal average air velocity and air flow rate deviations, and reduced horizontal air velocity variation. Air velocities for top 12% of scrubber exit area increased in relation to the number of slats.
